Wet pendulum testing is the most widely used slip testing method in Australia and the primary method we use for onsite assessments. A calibrated pendulum arm fitted with a standardised rubber slider swings across a wetted surface, measuring friction and producing a Slip Resistance Value (SRV) classified as a P rating from P0 to P5.
Testing is conducted onsite on your existing installed surfaces under AS 4663. It is non-destructive, does not require surfaces to be closed in most cases, and can be completed across most commercial floor types including tiles, stone, concrete, vinyl, timber, and resin.

Wet pendulum testing is used across a broad range of circumstances:
Construction and handover compliance. Confirming installed surfaces meet minimum P rating requirements under the National Construction Code prior to occupation. A surface that met its AS 4586 specification in the laboratory may perform differently once installed, sealed, or exposed to site conditions. Testing at handover captures actual performance. Post-incident testing. Independent testing following a slip or fall on your premises, producing a NATA-accredited report documenting surface conditions at the time of testing. Accepted by insurers, solicitors, and courts. Testing should be conducted as soon as practical following an incident to capture the surface in a condition as close as possible to the incident date.

Dry floor friction testing measures the coefficient of friction on a dry surface using a calibrated machine fitted with a rubber slider. Results are classified as D0 or D1 under AS 4586.
This method is suited to internal areas that remain consistently dry. It is not appropriate for areas that may become wet, such as external entrances, bathrooms, commercial kitchens, or pool surrounds. Where there is any possibility of surface wetting, wet pendulum testing is the correct method.

Dry floor friction testing is commonly used alongside wet pendulum testing in mixed environments where some areas are permanently dry and others are subject to moisture.

Sample testing is conducted at our Queensland-based laboratory, Australian Slip Ratings, to AS 4586, the Australian Standard for the classification of new pedestrian surface materials.
Unlike onsite testing under AS 4663, which assesses an installed surface in its actual environment, AS 4586 sample testing assesses the product itself under controlled laboratory conditions.
It is one of the most cost-effective ways to verify slip resistance before committing to a product across a large installation. Catching a non-compliant product at the specification stage is significantly less disruptive and costly than discovering a compliance issue after installation.

AS 4586 covers the classification of new pedestrian surface materials tested under laboratory conditions. AS 4663 covers the measurement of existing installed surfaces tested onsite. A manufacturer’s AS 4586 rating tells you how a product performed in controlled conditions. An AS 4663 result tells you how your installed surface is actually performing in its current environment, with all the variables that come with it.
Not necessarily. Installation method, sealers, cleaning practices, traffic wear, and environmental exposure can all alter how a surface performs once in place. Onsite testing under AS 4663 assesses actual installed performance. For compliance purposes, that is what matters.
Most onsite assessments take between one and two hours depending on the number of tests required. Additional time should be allocated for larger sites or where a high volume of surfaces are being tested.
For onsite testing, reports can be issued the same day for urgent requirements. A small expedited reporting fee applies. For laboratory sample testing, reports are typically issued within 24 hours of receipt of samples, depending on the number of samples submitted.
There is no single mandated frequency that applies to all buildings. Many facilities managers test annually in standard areas and more frequently in high-traffic or high-risk zones.
